Scripture to read today:
Deuteronomy 19; Deuteronomy 20; Deuteronomy 21; Galatians 3
Scripture that spoke to me:
Deuteronomy 19:11-13
“But suppose someone is hostile toward a neighbor and deliberately ambushes and murders him and then flees to one of the cities of refuge. In that case, the elders of the murderer’s hometown must send agents to the city of refuge to bring him back and hand him over to the dead person’s avenger to be put to death. Do not feel sorry for that murderer! Purge from Israel the guilt of murdering innocent people; then all will go well with you.
Observation:
There were many laws about what to do with a murderer. Most depended on the heart of the murderer- if he intended to kill or not. This part of the law says to not feel sorry for a murderer who deliberately kills- and that he must be killed!
Application:
This is what makes Jesus special. Not only does he not condemn the people who were murdering him, but he forgave them. He felt sorry for them because of their ignorance. Jesus often did things that seemed totally opposite from Jewish law. But He came to show us the right way to do things.
Prayer:
Lord, I don’t understand some of the contradictions in the Bible, but I find I don’t have to. I just need to look to Jesus. Thank you for sending us a Savior to show us the right things to do. Amen.
