December 19, 2008- The Bread of Life

Scripture to read today:
John 5; John 6

Scripture that spoke to me:
John 6:53-57
So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.

Observation:
Jesus has just fed 5000 men with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. Now the people are in a huge discussion about bread- because Jesus fed them, because God fed them manna during the time of Moses. Jesus is telling them (over and over again) that HE is the bread of life on which they should feast. They don’t understand, saying they can’t eat his flesh!

Application:
Jesus knew that He was going to institute a new sacrament- what we call communion- even long before that day came. So look again- what did Jesus say about communion? “Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.” I look forward to communion- to me it is a time to remember who Jesus is and what He has done, and will do, for all who believe.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for sending us sacraments that remind us of Your Son. Help us to remember the good things that You give us every day. Amen.
